volunteer program


We provide a unique opportunity for young German speaking students/ people from Germany who wish to combine volunteer social work experience with travel.

We have listed below details regarding our Volunteer Program for your consideration and if you are interested, would you please provide the information referred to at the end of this document.

VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

  1. The program is usually for three to six months; therefore a 12 month Working Holiday Visa is recommended.
  2. A living-away-from-home allowance of $350.00 per month.
  3. Accommodation on site – no charge – on a shared arrangement (own room/shared living area/bathroom).
  4. Meals, if taken at St Hedwig – no charge.

Work details would include -

  1. Assisting our nursing home and hostel residents with resident care and daily activities.
    This may include: 

    • room tidy; bed-making
    • wheelchair walks in the garden
    • talking with residents about their past, hobbies, etc.
    • doing activities with residents who may suffer with dementia to occupy them
    • helping to prepare activities; daily exercises, going on bus trips and so forth
  2. Work would be supervised by our Recreational Activity Officers and qualified staff.
  3. You would be required to work Monday to Friday (37.5 hour week).

Basically, during the period that you are with St Hedwig, you will be here as a volunteer and there is no employment agreement – you are not receiving a wage but a living-away-from-home allowance.

If the above conditions/work details appeal to you and you would be interested in such an arrangement, could you please provide us with a full resume including the following details -

  • Secondary school results (last year only)
  • Course details and results to date
  • Details of relevant work experience in aged care or other
  • Level of English communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Any other skills you wish to include
  • Please include a recent photograph

OTHER
Dress Code

  • Smart, casual attire appropriate for an aged care facility (no extreme fashion statements)
  • Sensible footwear that provides comfort with non-slip soles (e.g. sport shoe, closed in shoe)
  • No visual body piercings (ear studs acceptable). Examples of body piercings that are not acceptable include lip/nose/eyebrow studs; however, they are acceptable if you are willing to remove them during working hours.
  • No extreme hairstyles/cuts

Computer Usage
As our company computers are required for business purposes, access for volunteers is restricted.

For surfing websites or prolonged needs we recommend that you -

  • bring your own laptop (internet access can be sourced through a local provider at your own expense); or
  • use the internet cafĂ© in Blacktown
